Naperville is an ever changing community. The Naperville that existed 52 years ago when my family moved here is vastly different than the community we know today. Back then, there was little concern for international business opportunities and ethnic diversity was not in the forefront as it is in 2009.
We must strive to ensure that the make up of our chamber membership accurately reflects the make up of our communities. To that end, I plan to reach out to the Asian business community, which makes up a large percentage of our Naperville population but a small percentage of chamber membership, to determine how the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce can help their businesses grow. I want to Listen and Learn how cultural differences can be overcome and result in a stronger organization that will serve all of our Members.
At the chamber, we strive to help all businesses succeed. In doing so, we promote strong economic growth and engage all Member organizations in our programs and services.
As we embrace the cultural diversity that exists in Naperville, my hope is that you will seek opportunities to learn more about the varying ethnic groups within the chamber. One such opportunity is the upcoming Asian/Pacific American heritage Festival where you can celebrate the rich traditions and heritage of many of the area’s diverse ethnic groups, sponsored by the Xilin Association. This event takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 16 at the Naperville Community Concert Center, 104 E. Benton Ave. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Linda Yang of the Xilin Association at (630) 355-4322.
